Boston, 1897.

Death comes to the city heralded by a crimson moon and screams in the night. The Vampire King has come to claim the city, unless he can be stopped…

Maxine Parker has lived a solitary life. Not because she wishes to, but because she has no choice. Her empathic ability has rendered it impossible for her to touch anyone without killing them.

But as she is thrust into the middle of a war between the enigmatic and alluring Vampire King and three stalwart hunters, she learns she cannot kill what is already dead.

My Rating:

My Review:

This book was phenomenal! Every reader knows that every once in a great while, a book will come along and totally capture your heart. This is one such for me. I have never read anything by Kathryn Kingsley before, but when an author writes about Dracula I’m all in. Vampires are one of my favorites, and Dracula is my all time favorite. This is a retelling of a classic with a fresh new idea that does it justice. The gothic atmosphere was captured to perfection. The story is set in Boston in the late 1800’s, and it follows the story of Maxine Parker, an empath, who is drawn in to a plot by vampire hunters to destroy Dracula. The King of Vampires and his horrific creations are out to destroy this young city and the residents within. Maxine’s gift has left her a nieve, isolated and lonely young woman who is shunned by people because they sense her otherness. She cannot touch or be touched lest she completely wrenches a person’s soul from them leaving them dead or almost. Except for Dracula. The way Dracula is portrayed jumps out and draws you into his world. You feel drawn to him even though he’s the villain of the story. The dark obsessive nature of Dracula is revealed through Maxine’s eyes, but we also can see how humane he can be, how he turns obsession into love. The enfolding relationship between these two leaves you breathless. Their dialogue and the prose are beautifully written and match the time period. Vad’s sensual and erotic seduction of Maxine just sizzles. Whew! Maxines building need, and desire for what he can offer is at odds with her beliefs in what is right and wrong. Societies taboos. I love this couple, and even though the odds are highly against them finding happiness together I can’t help but hope for it. I have already began the second book in this series, but that is for another day! I would highly recommend this book in a heartbeat!
